Thanks to the contribution of the Lombardy Region and the Lombardy Chamber System under the “SI4.0 2024 Call”, Techinnova S.p.A. developed the ARA – Amico Robotico degli Anziani (Robotic Friend for the Elderly) project, an initiative dedicated to creating a collaborative robot designed to support elderly and frail individuals in their daily lives.

ARA was conceived to improve the quality of home care through a technology capable of interacting naturally with the user, monitoring both physical and cognitive well-being, and assisting caregivers and healthcare professionals in their daily monitoring and prevention activities.
The system combines advanced robotics, IoT sensors and artificial intelligence algorithms to collect and analyze meaningful information, transforming it into alerts and insights that enable more timely management of health conditions.

Beneficiary: Techinnova S.p.A.

Call: SI4.0 2024

General objective: Promote the development of innovative solutions based on digital technologies in line with the National Transition 5.0 Plan

Short description: Development of a collaborative robot equipped with environmental sensors, cognitive monitoring functions, and a dedicated AI platform, designed to assist elderly people in their daily activities and improve monitoring of their health status.

Objectives

The ARA project aims to make the lives of elderly people safer, more autonomous, and more serene.
The robot has been conceived to accompany users in their everyday activities, observe the home environment in a non-intrusive way, and identify potential risks before they turn into emergencies.

Key expected results include:

  • continuous monitoring of the user’s condition through IoT sensors and data analysis;
  • detection of behavioural or environmental anomalies, interpreted by artificial intelligence models trained to identify risk patterns;
  • support for cognitive well-being, thanks to tests developed with the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and integrated directly into the robot;
  • reduced caregiver workload, since caregivers and healthcare professionals can easily access data through a web or mobile interface.

Proposed solution

The solution developed by Techinnova is structured as a complete ecosystem: a robot operating within the home environment, a dedicated cloud platform, and a set of analytical algorithms that transform the collected data into meaningful information for both the user and their caregivers.

The robot represents the core of the entire system.
Designed to move autonomously and interact safely, it uses IoT sensors to detect environmental parameters and potentially risky conditions. Prototyping activities were carried out using 3D printing and embedded boards such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi, ensuring rapid development and high customization possibilities.

Alongside the hardware components, significant attention was given to software.
The cloud platform receives and processes data, organizes it into clear indicators, and sends notifications whenever necessary. The integration of artificial intelligence also enables the generation of personalized nudges, suggestions that encourage healthy habits or remind the user of important daily activities.

Infrastructure and technological components

To ensure reliability and operational continuity, the ARA project is based on a solid and secure digital architecture.
Data is transmitted through encrypted channels to redundant servers, ensuring access to information even in case of technical failures or traffic peaks. Multifactor authentication protects dashboard access, while firewalls and intrusion detection systems safeguard the platform from unauthorized access.

Advanced robotics is combined with components developed through additive manufacturing, allowing agile, sustainable and easily upgradable production. Particular attention has also been given to environmental sustainability: many parts of the robot can be replaced and recycled, following de-manufacturing principles that reduce waste and environmental impact.

Expected impact

The introduction of ARA aims to generate tangible benefits for both the end user and the entire social-healthcare system.

For elderly individuals, the robot acts as a constant yet non-intrusive presence, capable of increasing safety and supporting autonomy even in situations of frailty. Its ability to detect changes in health conditions in a timely manner helps reduce emergency risks and allows faster, more targeted interventions.

For caregivers and healthcare professionals, ARA becomes a valuable support tool: it enables the monitoring of multiple users simultaneously, improves workflow organization, and provides objective data to guide care decisions.

More broadly, the project fits into the evolution of telemedicine services, contributing to a more sustainable model of home-based care and promoting a proactive, connected approach to health management.
